As a part of Societal Application of Technology and State relevant R&D exercises, the Council has taken up a number of activities in the field of biotechnology with financial support from the Department of Bio-Technolgy & Department of Science & Technology, Government of India during last couple of years.
Through passage of time, it has been felt necessary to develop a division for biotechnology in the Council with Scientists having academic background in different branches of Life Sciences. Now, the said Division implements projects in the field of Biotechnology.
Among the completed projects of the Council in the field of Biotechnology, Eco-Chinese Hatchery at Satchand Block, Prawn Hatchery at Kemtali under Melaghar Block, Hardening Facility of Tissue Culture Plants at Tripura University, Rearing / Fattening of Pigs at RK Nagar under Jirania & Satchand Blocks and introduction and popularization of vermicomposting are worth mentioning.
This division has developed partnership with number of working Scientists of the different line Departments particularly Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Resources of Tripura as well as with the Scientists of Higher and Technical Institutes viz. Tripura University, College of Fisheries (CAU), Regional Institute of Pharmaceutical Science & Technology (RIPSAT) etc.

A project on Bioresource Complex has got sanction of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The objective of the project is to development of bio-entrepreneurship among rural youth based on local bioresources.
It will have 3 major components viz. (i) Training facility and knowledgedissemination, (ii) Demonstration units (both land & industrial modules) and (iii) Outreach activities.
It will be a joint venture of Tripura State Council for Science & Technology and Department of Agriculture, Govt. of Tripura with tieing up with Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (an unit of Ramkrishna Ashram), Nimpith; North East Institute of Science & Technology (formerly RRL), Jorhat and Institute of Bioresources, Imphal. Site has been identified at State Agri. Research Station of the Agriculture Department, Govt. of Tripura at M. B. Tilla, Agartala.
Under the sponsorship of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India a project entitled “Introduction of Soyabean Cultivation in Upland (Tilla) Soil of Tripura and its processing for the benefit of ST beneficiaries” has been taken up for ST beneficiaries of Jirania Block with an aim to provide protein rich soyabean based food products and soyamilk as an alternative to dairy milk as an income generation among the ST beneficiaries.
